" Driving Bangladesh's Mango Export Boom: Targets, Projections, and Challenges "
The expansion of mango plantations suitable for mango export, coupled with the implementation of modern orchard management techniques and the exploration of new markets, has played a crucial role in driving the consistent growth of mango exports from Bangladesh to various countries and regions, including the Middle East and Europe, in recent years. This positive trajectory is expected to continue during the current season.
DAE has set an ambitious target to produce 10,000 metric tons of exportable mangoes this season. Concurrently, fruit exporters are aiming to export 4,000 metric tons of Bangladesh's national fruit during the fiscal year 2022-2023, surpassing the previous year's export volume of 1,757 metric tons by more than double.
Exporters have indicated that the price per kilogram of exported mangoes, excluding air freight charges, falls within the range of Tk150 to Tk160. They have further projected that the country stands to earn approximately $600,000, or Tk 64 crore, from mango exports this year.
In the previous year, Bangladesh successfully exported seven distinct mango varieties, including Khirshapat, Gopalbhog, Himsagar, Langra, and Amrapali, generating a revenue of around $236,027. To promote mango exports as an agricultural product, the government provides a 20% cash incentive to exporters.
Presently, Bangladeshi mangoes are making their way to more than 15 countries, encompassing the United Arab Emirates, Bhutan, Switzerland, Great Britain, India, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Nepal, Sweden, Singapore, and Swaziland. The expansion is significant, considering that just five years ago, mangoes were limited to being exported to only 2–3 countries.
SM Jahangir Hossain, the president of the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables, and Allied Product Exporter's Association, expresses an optimistic outlook, foreseeing that the actual export of mangoes will surpass this year's target. The association is actively engaged in establishing connections with buyers from various countries, fostering promising opportunities.
The mango export season typically spans from May to July, with exports scheduled to commence in the third week of May this year, according to exporters.
Shaon Traders, a vegetable and fruit exporter in Satkhira, plans to export 100 tons of mangoes this season, including varieties such as Gopalbhog and Gobindabhog. Mango exports to England and Portugal are slated to commence in the last week of May.
The mango production target for the current fiscal year in Bangladesh remains unchanged from the previous year, standing at 23.35 lakh metric tons. However, favorable circumstances such as timely flowering and the absence of natural calamities that could harm the flowers have led the DAE to anticipate an actual production of approximately 28 lakh metric tons, signifying a 20% increase beyond the target.
KJM Abdul Awal, acting director of the Horticulture Wing of the DAE, acknowledged that achieving a record-high mango output this year hinges on the resilience of mango orchards in the hill tract region against the impending Cyclone Mocha.
According to mango exporters, commercial mango cultivation in Bangladesh is experiencing an upward trajectory, contributing to the surge in exports. They firmly believe that by meeting domestic demand, exports can be multiplied manifold, yielding greater economic benefits.
However, Mohammad Arifur Rahman, director of the Exportable Mango Production project under the DAE, shed light on the challenges surrounding the increase in mango exports to various European countries.
